Robert M. Hayes, a computer professional who had taught the first course in computer applications of information processing at UCLA in 1958, was drafted to create a crash course for exhibit librarians. Its purpose was to demystify the field of data processing and to encourage librarians to take a broader view of their professional sphere. Gordon Martin reflected that "the influence that specially trained, enthusiastic librarians will have cannot be assessed precisely, but the potential is large (19)."
