A key factor in crafting a hip, fresh image of the librarian — then and now — was the portrayal of library professionals as adept manipulators of dazzling new technologies. During the six-month run of the fair, Library 21 was staffed by six cohorts of 20-30 librarians, and each group served for periods of 33-40 days. But first they were given a 5-day instruction session at the University of Washington’s School of Librarianship, an immersion course in the application of computers to information handling.
