One objective of the exhibit was to improve the image of the profession. Despite their sympathetic portrayals of librarians, the movies Desk Set (1957) and The Music Man (1962), had done little to dispel the stereotype of repressed bun-headed bookworms, and the ALA wanted to do something about it. It was decided that librarians should be selected "who were at least pleasant in appearance, who dressed well, who were outgoing, cheerful, friendly people (16)." The librarians selected also represented a fairly diverse variety of ethnicities, for the time.
