Planners had already begun envisioning a model library for the new millennium. Soon after the Seattle fair was announced, the Washington Library Association voted to urge the American Library Association (ALA) to sponsor an exhibit (3). In 1958, ALA hired Joseph Becker to investigate the feasibility of a "Library of the Future." Becker, a networking specialist and pioneering information scientist, then was given the job of coordinating the design and funding of the project.
