President John F. Kennedy was to have attended the fair's October 21 closing ceremonies, but canceled his trip at the last minute on the pretext of a cold. The next day the blockade of Cuba brought the United States and the Soviet Union to the brink of nuclear war. Suddenly the fair’s World of Tomorrow with its rocket cars and "undreamed of conveniences" began to look cartoonish. Still, one section looks surprisingly current even today: the American Library Association’s exhibit, Library 21.
